De bessen zijn helder rood en blijven de hele winter aan de struik. De bessen zijn pas in het najaar rijp.

De hoogste hulst in ons land staat in Zelhem (Gelderland) en is 18 meter hoog. Aan de dorpsstraat in Havelte (Drenthe) staat een hulst geplant tussen 1700 en 1750, met een omvang van 4 meter.

Nuttig gebruik van Hulst

Het hout was vroeger zeer gewild voor schaakstukken, inlegwerk en houtgravures. Omdat het hout hard en fijnvezelig is wordt het nog steeds gebruikt voor o.a.: houtdraaierij, bij inlegwerk en voor gravures.
