Deze boom groeiede van oorsprong in een groot gebeid van Oost Turkije tot China. En is in twee stappen over een groter gebied verspreid. Na de veroveringen van Alexander de Grote  in de vierde eeyuw voor Christus naar Macedonie en Griekenland.
