Nu bestaan er zwarte en witte moerbei-bomen, die hier op een zonnige plek kunnen groeien. Alleen de witte moerbei heeft eigenlijk een meer sub-tropisch klimaat nodig dan de zwarte moerbei. De vruchten van de witte moerbei zijn wel eetbaar, maar zeker niet zo lekker als die van de zwarte moerbei. En de witte moerbei is vaak alleen geteeld, omdat die nuttig is daarop of met de takken ervan zijderupsen te telen.

De vruchten van de witte moerbei (Morus alba) zijn ook te eten, maar worden vaak minder lekker gevonden. De bomen kunnen veel groter uitgroeien dan de zwarte moerbei.

Zwarte Moerbei = Morus Nigra hoort bij de moerbeifamilie. Is een niet hoog ( 4- 5 meter) uitgroeiende eenhuizige boom, waarbij kruisbestuiving niet nodig is. De geel-groene niet opvallende bloemen tooien de boom in mei-juni. De mannelijke bloemen staan in ronde katjes, die na de bloei afvallen. Het is een langzame groeier en pas na 6 tot 8 jaar gaat de boom in augustus -september moerbeien geven. Deze vruchten worden erg lekker gevonden, maar niet alleen door mensen. De bomen kunnen erg oud worden en dan jarenlang grote hoeveelheden vruchten geven.

En zorg dat je ze op vruchtbare, niet pure kleigrond plant. Zon blijft belangrijk en plant ze nooit bij een terras of op een plek waar je was wil drogen of je auto stalt. Want de rijpe zwarte vruchten geven erg moeizame vlekken.
