De Steel-iep ULMUS LAEVIS is inheems in Europa. Hoogte tot 20m.

Bloemen (wit)ontluikend in maart, op ongewoon lange stelen, waardoor ze in de wind trillen. Vruchten ( groen, plat) gevormd in mei, ongeveer 1,2 cm. lang met witte haren rond de randen.

Iepehout is van hoge kwaliteit en heeft vaak een fraai gevlekte tekening. Omdat iepehout niet gemakkelijk verrot is het geschikt voor gebruik in en bij water: bootkielen en meerpalen. Iepebast werd verwerkt tot touw. De bast wordt voor medische doeleinden gebruikt. Het loof werd aan het vee gevoerd.

Omdat de fladderiep bijna niet gevoelig is voor de iepenziekte zullen er over een tijdje alleen van deze soort monumentale bomen in Nederland te vinden zijn.
