VLINDERSTRUIK

De Vlinderstruik (Buddleja Davidii) is pas vanaf 1900 op grote schaal hier aangeplant. Al in de 17e eeuw is de plant vanuit China in Europa ingevoerd. Eerst rond de Tweede Wereldoorlog is de plant hier ingeburgerd. Maar omdat de plant van oorsprong het vooral goed doet op droge, rijkere grond geeft deze exoot hier weinig problemen. Zeker doordat hier maar weinig geschikte groeiplekken in onze landschappen bestaan.

VLINDERPLANT

Buddleja trekt veel vlinders aan. Het is echter geen waardplant voor hier van oorsprong voorkomende vlindersoorten. Dus bevordert de plant de biodiversiteit van vlinders niet. Maar onder andere Atalanta, Dagpauwoog, Witjes, Kleine Vos en Distelvlinder bezoeken de bloeiende plant zeker vaak. De bloemen zijn alleen geschikt voor insecten met een lange tong. Daarbij bestuiven deze bezoekers de bloem gelijk.

Bij ernstige vorst vriezen de planten in ( bij ernstige vorst van meer dan -15 graden, kan Buddleja zelfs doodvriezen). Normaliter lopen de planten aan de voet in het voorjaar weer uit.

Voor een volle bloei is snoei in het voorjaar op zijn laatst in maart nodig. In vele varieteiten met verschillende bloemkleuren is de Vlinderstruik hier te koop . Er zijn bladverliezende, maar ook altijd groenblijvende soorten.

MEDISCH

Het blad bevat zeepstoffen. De stof is giftig voor vissen. Voor vee werd het vroeger gebruikt bij problemen met (aars-)maden. Voor mensen werd het als thee gebruikt voor het ophoesten van slijm. Zonder medisch voorschrift echter nooit zelf gebruiken.

In de theetuin van de Hortus in Nijmegen staan vlinderstruiken, maar in de Spoorkuil bij het centrum van Nijmegen met een eigen bijzonder microklimaat staan wintergroene Buddleja’s in het wild.
