VLIER VERHAAL

De vlier is verweven in de Europese folklore. In het algemeen houdt vlier ‘heksen en andere enge wezens’ op afstand.

Een oude vertelling verhaalt van twee jongemannen, die zich heel lang geleden op een zwoele zomerdag te slapen legden in de schaduw van een oude knoestige vlierstruik.

….”Een van de twee zag in zijn droom hoe uit de mond van zijn vriend een klein grijs muisje kroop. Het diertje keek even om zich heen. Vervolgens rende het snel naar de stam van de oude vlier.

Daar bleef het een tijdje rondscharrelen. En ritselde het tussen het afgevallen blad en de dode takken. Ineens verdween het muisje even snel als het gekomen was in de mond van de slaper.

Eenmaal goed wakker, vertelde de jongeman deze droom aan zijn vriend.

Die vond dat de droom één of andere betekenis moest hebben. Want een droom onder een vlierstruik heeft voorspellende waarde.

‘Wij gaan gewoon kijken op de plek, waar het muisje rond bleef scharrelen’, zei de vriend.

Met vereende krachten begonnen zij de grond tussen de wortels onder de vlier af te tasten. Van een muizenhol was geen spoor te vinden.

Na lang zoeken voelden zij een hard, koel voorwerp onder de grond.

Er werd een spade geleend uit een nabijgelegen schuur. Toen begon het graafwerk.

Er kwam een mooie stenen pot uit het gat. Met veel moeite kregen zij het deksel open.

De pot bleek tot de rand toe gevuld met zilver- en goudstukken.”…..

Hoe de pot daar gekomen is, wordt niet verteld. Maar misschien is het wel een schat van een heks of een duivel……

Van de vlier werd en wordt nog steeds gezegd, dat vele duistere wezens tot de vaste bewoners van oude vlierstruiken behoren. Omhakken of uitrukken van een vlier, vraagt om problemen. De kans dat de bewoners zich wreken wegens deze verplichtte verhuizing is niet gering.
