Carpinus Betulus. De haagbeuk is een soortgelijke boom als de beuk, hoewel veel kleiner (maximaal 19 m.). te vinden in bossen en kreupelhout. De hangende mannelijke en rechtopstaande vrouwelijke bloemen zijn groenbruin en openen zich in april/mei. De katjes blijven in de knop gedurende de winter en komen pas in het voorjaar te voorschijn. vruchten zijn kleine nootjes met grote opvallende bracteeën. De haagbeuk is inheems in Klein Azië

en Europa. Veel aangeplant als haag, park- en straat-boom. Het harde fijn-vezelige hout wordt gebruikt voor hamers, kegels en bepaalde beweegbare piano-onderdelen. De bladeren kleuren helder geel in de herfst. De schors is grijs met bruine strepen en met verticale schorslijsten.

In Utrecht in het Hooglandsepark staat een haagbeuk, geplant tussen 1750 en 1800, 25 meter hoog en met een omvang van 480 cm.

De haagbeuk is een belangrijke boom van de rijkere vochtige loofbossen. Hij groeit daar van nature samen met de zomereik, de winterlinde en de hazelaar. De mooiste haagbeukbossen komen vooral in zuid limburg en in de beekdalen in oostelijk Nederland voor.

Een van de meest wonderbaarlijke boomvormen is de geknotte haagbeuk. Om de boom tegen veevraat te beschermen wordt hij op 2 of 3 meter hoogte afgezet en gesnoeid. op den duur ontstaan zo grillige boomvormen, die in de avondschemering meer weg hebben van een vergadering spoken. Even over de grens bij Oldenzaal in Bentheim staan indrukwekkende knothaagbeuken. In de oerbossen van Neuenburg en Hasbruch vindt men er nog veel meer.

In Zuid limburg wordt de haagbeuk als perceelscheiding benut.
