Maretak vindt men meestal als groene bos op appelbomen of populieren.
Het is een halfparasiet met gaffelvormige stugge takjes rond een bloemtrosje, waaruit in de winter de witte bessen komen.

Halfparasiet op bomen. De bladeren maken bepaalde voedingsstoffen. Plaatselijk ten zuiden van de lijn Brussel-Maastricht vrij algemeen, vooral op populieren en appelbomen. Tot 50 cm. hoog.
Bloeitijd van maart tot mei. De witte bessen zijn tamelijk giftig. Toch eten onder andere lijsters ze. Bessen rijp vanaf november.
In Italië worden de bessen gebruikt als lijm, om vogels te vangen (vandaar ook de naam Vogellijm). Volksnaam is Mistletoe.
In Zuid Limburg werd vroeger bij de geboorte van een kind op een appelboom een maretak geënt,
als wens voor een goed leven.
Medisch gebruik
De bebladerde takken worden als hartversterkend middel gebruikt alhoewel ze in grote hoeveelheden zeker giftig zijn). Het verlaagt de bloeddruk, vertraagt de hartslag, verstekt de
vaatwanden, versterkt het afweersysteem en remt tumoren e.d.
Als gemmo-preparaat Viscum Album 1C worden de jonge knoppen van de maretak voorgeschreven bij: overgangsklachten, oorsuizingen en/of een te hoge bloeddruk.
Bij overgangsklachten goed te combineren met het gemmo-preparaat Sorbus Domestica 1D (de Peerlijsterbes, een al vroeg gekweekte versie van de lijsterbes met grotere -zo groot als een meikers- vaak peervormige bessen, die van rood naar bruin verkleuren).
Homeopathisch: Viscum Album wordt voorgeschreven bij: te hoge bloeddruk, aderverkalking, duizeligheid, St.Vitusdans, vallende ziekte, bronchiale astma, abnormaal sterke en langdurige menstruatie, abnormale bloedingen tussen de menstruaties in en bij ouderdomsverschijnselen.
In meerdere homeopathische complex middelen wordt Viscum Album toegepast. Deze middelen zijn ontwikkeld voor te hoge bloeddruk, hartproblemen en problemen bij de menstruatie en de overgang.
