Lariks           Larix Decidua. Larch(eng)     Mélèze(fr)

De lariks is een grote sierlijke boom, inheems in de bergen van centraal en zuid Europa. Een bladverliezende naaldboom, die boven de 900 meter wel 42 meter hoog kan worden. Hier blijven lariksen veel kleiner. Vaak te vinden aan de rand van heuvelachtig bosgebied. De mannelijke en vrouwelijke bloemen groeien aan één boom, en zijn respectievelijk goudgeel en helderrood. De katjes komen uit aan het eind van maart tot begin mei. Kegels rijpend van groen naar bruin in de herfst, tot 3 cm. lang; elke schub enigszins gegolfd. Twijgen geelachtig, vaak hangend. Naalden heldergroen: het loof verkleurt tot goudgeel en valt in november af. Schors is grijs of rozeachtig grijs met verticale barsten en schubben.

De Japanse Lariks of Goudlork ( larix kaempferi ) onderscheidt zich o.a. door de kleur van de twijgen= roodbruin en de naalden. Bij de goudlork hebben de blauwgroene naalden twee duidelijke witte strepen aan de onderzijde. In ons land zijn vaak Lariksen aangeplant die een kruising zijn tussen de Japanse en Europese Lariks. Die groeien hier beter, dan de Europese Lariks. Deze boom voelt zich beter thuis in de bergen, zeker boven de 900 meter.

Uit het hout wordt Lariks-terpentijn gewonnen ( of Venetiaanse Terpetijn), dat als de beste grondstof voor klassieke olieverf wordt gebruikt. Het wordt ook medisch ingezet bij Reuma en verstoppingen van de ademwegen.

Lariks-terpetijn gewonnen uit Lariskhars bevat circa 15% aetherisch olie. Deze olie is opgebouwd uit 70% alpha-pinen en verder Car-3-en, Borneol, Bornylacetaat, Dipenten en Guajacol, Verder zit er 50-65 % Kars-zuren in als Laricinolzuur, Laricorosen (ongeveer 15% als onzeepbare hars) , maar ook Laerixylacetaat en Abietinzuur.

De vrouwelijke kegels worden gebruikt voor likeur en er wordt gelei van gemaakt.
