STEKELBREM

Er zijn meerdere soorten planten uit de Familie van de vlinderbloemigen, die regelmatig door elkaar worden gehaald. De planten dragen allemaal gele op elkaar lijkende bloemen en groeien ook op gelijkwaardige plekken.

Een van die planten is de STEKELBREM (Genista Angica) . Vaak op hogere zandgronden, de Waddeneilanden, kalkarme duinen. Maar ook veel in Zuid Limburg en kalkrijke duinen. Door vermesting en begroeiing door grassen is de plant hier sinds de Tweede wereldoorlog sterk afgenomen.

Het is een stekelige struik die vaak vlak over de grond groeit (15 tot 40 cm), maar ook soms hoog uitgroeit tot meer dan 1 mter vijftig. De stekelbrem bloeit met uiteraard gele bloemen in trossen eind van de lente tot midden zomer. Vrucht is een kleine gekromde peul. Stekelbrem is zwak giftig.Het is een waardplant voor het groentje en het heideblauwtje. Bijen bezoeken de plant voor nectar en stuifmeelpollen.

Dan heb je ook nog de DUITSE BREM (Genista Germanica) dat net als de Stekelbrem tot de oorspronkelijke houtige gewassen van hier hoort.

Deze struik komt op meer plekken in Europa voor, en wordt gemiddeld 60 cm. hoog. De bloeiende bloemtoppen bevatten net als de Verfbrem (Genista Tinctoria) een gele verfstof. De Duitse brem bloeit vooral in mei en juni. Deze struik groeit in bosranden en langs heidevelden en houdt van iets droge, voedselarme grond. Vooral aan de Duitse grens en rond Nijmegen komt de plant veel voor.

Deze hele struik is giftig, want het bevat alkaloide chinolizidine. De zaden en bloemen zijn giftig omdat ze 0,25% alkaloiden zoals cystine bevatten. De takken bevatten sparteine.

Maar Stekende brem of te wel Gaspeldoorn ( Ulex Europaeus) treft men ook vaak in ons land bij heidevelden aan. Dit is een plant met vele namen: in Friesland heeft men het over Bremerheide, op de Zeeuwse eilanden vaak over Duindoorn, in Zuid Limburg over Genst , maar elders in Limburg over Ginster, langs de Veluwezoom heeft men het over Kattendoorn en op meerdere andere plekken over Stekende Brem.

Dus lang leve de verwarring.
