De JUDASBOOM = Cercis Siliquastrum is een breedgroeiende, bladverliezende boom of struik (2 tot 7 meter), die maar langzaam groeit en in het voorjaar (april, mei) voordat het blad verschijnt uitbundig bloeit met trosjes violette of roze vlinderbloemige bloemen. Omdat de boom een penwortel vormt is het niet raadzaam (en haalbaar) de boom op oudere leeftijd te herplanten.
Heeft een zonnige, warme plantplek nodig met bij voorkeur een licht, maar kalkrijke bodem. Kan zeker als jonge boom niet tegen erg stevige langdurige vorst. Is geschikt om op een zuidmuur als gevelplant te leiden. Niet planten tussen bestrating, heeft een brede boomcirkel met bodem begroeiing nodig. Kan goed tegen droogte en kan dankzij de lange penwortel diep uit de grond water halen. Het is een vlinderbloemige plant en leeft net als de meeste soorten vlinderbloemigen in mutualistische symbiose met stikstofbindende bacteriën.
