Bloeit van februari tot april: de manlijke katjes rozeachtig met grijze zijde-achtige haren, ongeveer 5-10 cm. lang. De vrouwelijke met dezelfde kleur. Vruchtkatjes ongeveer 10 – 12,5 cm. lang, bij rijpheid witte wollige zaden vrijlatend in mei. Bladeren bijna rond met gegolfde randen, op de wortelscheuten vaak wigvormig. De platte bladstelen veroorzaken de trillende ‘ratelende’ beweging van het blad in de wind. Hebben paren klieren aan de voet van de bladschijf. De schors is glad en grijsachtig met horizontale lijnen.

Het kruis van Christus zou van het hout van ratelpopulier zijn gemaakt.
